Cancer CaNews and Notesre Nova Scotia presented Excellence Awards in leadership, innovation and Patient Care at its Celebrating Excellence event on June 6, 2011.

Dr. David Henderson, Medical Director, Palliative Care, Colchester East Hants Health Authority was presented with the Leadership Excellence Award. Dr. Deborah McLeod, Clinician Scientist with the Capital Health Cancer Care Program was presented with the Innovation Excellence Award and Camp Goodtime Medical Team was presented with the Excellence in Patient Care Award.

The Awards were introduced in 2009 to mark the 10th Anniversary of Cancer Care Nova Scotia. They acknowledge the work and commitment of people who have helped the organization further cancer prevention, treatment and care for Nova Scotia patients and families.

• Congratulations to Cancer Care Nova Scotia’s Surveillance and Epidemiology Unit who once achieved 'Gold' Status for the 2004-2008 submission to the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR). The SEU submits Nova Scotia Cancer Registry data for certification, a process that measures NS data against a set of predefined quality criteria agreed to by NAACCR members. NAACCR is a cancer registration standards organization, representing central cancer registries across Canada and the United States as well as cancer registration standard setting bodies including Statistics Canada, the US Centers for Disease Control, US Cancer Institute - Surveillance & Epidemiology End Results Program (SEER) and the American Joint Committee on Cancer.

• The Nova Scotia Chapter of the Canadian Association of Nursing in Oncology (CANO) will host the 23rd annual CANO/ACIO conference in Halifax between September 11 and 14th.
