Teach Back - Helping patients understand their diagnosis and treatment plan

Research has shown that many patients remember less than 50% of what a health professional tells them about their condition and/or how to manage at home. The “teach-back” method is an effective way of ensuring that patients understand the information that health professionals share. It also increases a patient’s compliance with protocols and improves treatment outcomes.

Cancer Care Nova Scotia has developed a learning module which uses video demonstrations of the teach-back method for patient teaching in an oncology setting.

The learning module, which takes only 15 minutes to complete, is available on both the Capital Health Learning Module System (LMS) and the Healthcare Nova Scotia Learning Management System. Since launching the program in mid-August over 100 health professionals have completed the training.
