Dr. Carman Giacomantonio stepping down from role as Chief Medical Director

Dr. Carman Giacomantonio was appointed Chief Medical Director for Cancer Care Nova Scotia in 2010. He has decided to finish his second term one year early, effective June 27, 2014.

Dr. Giacomantonio said his reasons for leaving CCNS a year earlier t2014carmanhan originally intended are both personal and professional. “Over the last four years I’ve juggled the roles of cancer surgeon, administrator, and researcher, in addition to finding time to spend with family,” he said, adding that he has had more than a few sleepless nights trying to give each role the attention it so rightly deserves.

Dr. Giacomantonio said he is still committed to doing his part to improve the cancer system in the province, but indicated his heart is with patients saying, “Time and again, over the past four years, my role as a surgeon has often had to take a ‘back seat’ so I could deal with my administrative responsibilities.”

Over the last several weeks he evaluated his priorities and decided that the time is right to return to full time work as a surgeon and scientist, and dedicate some much overdue time to the health and wellness of himself and his family.

Under Dr. Giacomantonio’s leadership CCNS has a defined a collaborative and inclusive process for clinical standards development, review, and implementation with the first clinical treatment standard for the management of rectal cancer almost complete; he has also provided leadership in developing a strategic plan for Cancer Care Nova Scotia, which will provide direction over the next five years.

Dr. Giacomantonio said he has enjoyed working with health administrators and providers across the province, CCNS board members and staff and is proud of the collective accomplishments over the four years, saying, “I know the good work will continue.”

Over the next couple of months, Chris Collier, Interim Chief Operating Officer and Dr. Giacomantonio will work with the team at Department of Health and Wellness to fine-tune the position description and begin the recruitment process for the next Chief Medical Director.
