Recognizing Excellence

Join usThe phrase, ‘It takes a village..,’ is a fitting description of the many people, perspectives and specialties necessary for a responsive cancer system with the necessary expertise and knowledge to ensure patients and families receive the best care possible, based on the latest evidence and best practice.

Those who make up Nova Scotia’s cancer system are all part of that amazing village. They include highly qualified cancer specialists, family doctors, nurses, home care workers, lab technicians, health educators, administrators, volunteers, community groups, and countless others, each of whom do their bit to ease the journey for patients and their families.

Cancer Care Nova Scotia is once again inviting nominations for the CCNS Excellence Awards and will host a ceremony later in the year to honour all who are part of Nova Scotia’s cancer system. All are encouraged to submit nominations for individuals and/or groups/teams who they believe have gone ‘above and beyond’ to serve cancer patients and families.

This year, the awards ceremony will occur in the Fall instead of the early June timeframe of previous years. The celebration will be built into the agenda of the Fall Provincial Cancer Network meeting. The change in timing from the previous June timeframe and the decision to include it as part of this Fall’s Provincial Cancer Network meeting were decisions made by members of CCNS’s voluntary advisory board. They believed the Provincial Cancer Network meeting, which brings together individuals and teams from across the province who work with cancer patients and families an appropriate backdrop for celebrating our collective accomplishments and for recognizing all individuals and/or groups who are nominated, as well as those being presented with an excellence award.

Planning is already underway for the 2014 Excellence Awards, but we need your help. Now is the time to start thinking about who you will nominate for an Excellence Award. The deadline for nominations is June 30, 2014.

This year awards will be presented in two categories: excellence in patient care and leadership. Two awards will be presented under the excellence in patient care umbrella, one recognizing a health professional or health professional group and the other recognizing a volunteer or volunteer group. One award will also recognize leadership excellence.

Since the Excellence Awards were introduced in 2009, CCNS has recognized the contributions of 12 amazing individuals and six talented groups or teams. These individuals and teams were chosen from many worthy nominations and were honoured for leadership, innovation, and excellence in patient care. You can help us add to this list.
