Living Beyond Cancer
Patient Education Program Available Province-wide

Living Beyond Cancer, a two-and-a-half-hour patient education program to support patients who have just completed cancer treatment, is now available across the province through Telehealth.

First developed and introduced by Capital Health in the Fall of 2012 with a similar program available at the Cape Breton Cancer Centre in Sydney, the sessions are presented once a month. Although the content was developed for individuals who have just completed treatment, all cancer survivors and their families are welcome to attend.

The sessions are coordinated by CCNS and delivered by Capital Health Cancer Care Program staff, with support for Telehealth provided by the district health authorities. The sesspatricia_kimions broadly focus on life after cancer treatment. Patients learn about follow-up care, the short- and long-term side effects of cancer treatment, the importance of physical activity and nutrition, coping skills, spirituality, sexual concerns, as well as available community services and supports. The group education session is also an opportunity for individuals to meet other cancer survivors and to ask the cancer team questions.

“From the beginning, participant evaluations have been very positive, but we recognized that the program was not accessible for cancer survivors outside Capital Health and Cape Breton District Health Authority,” said Marianne Arab, Manager of Supportive Care for Cancer Care Nova Scotia. “Using Telehealth and with the support of Cancer Patient Navigators, we are able to reach all cancer survivors who are interested in participating.”

Participant feedback has been very positive with many participants saying they’d recommend it to others. Among the recurring benefits cited is the validation that the range of emotions cancer survivors experience is normal.

The next step in making the program even more accessible is the development of a DVD and a province-wide distribution plan so that cancer survivors and their families have another option to easily access the content provided during the session if they are unable to attend in person or if they want to share it more broadly with family and loved ones. The sessions will also be available on YouTube.
