Dr. Giacomantonio Receives Honour from Italian Republic

On April 27, 2013 Dr. Carman Giacomantonio was presented with the Order of Merit for Italy, making him a Knight of the Italian Republic. The honour was presented to him by Dr. Enrico Padula, the Consul General of Italy in Montreal and Mr. Rodolfo Meloni, the Honourary Consul of the Italian Republic in Nova Scotia during a celebration at the Italian Canadian Convention Centre in Halifax.

“This award is similar to the Order of Canada, and it is awarded by the President of Italy and the Italian Prime Minister", said Mr. Meloni. “Each country has a means of recognizing those who go above and beyond in fields including literature, the arts, economy, public service as well as social, philanthropic and humanitarian activities. Dr. Giacomantonio received the award in recognition of his leadership role as Chief Medical Director for Cancer Care Nova Scotia and for his outstanding contributions as a cancer surgeon, researcher, educator and community leader.”

In addition to his roles of Chief Medical Director for Cancer Care NoCGva Scotia and cancer surgeon at Capital Health, Dr. Giacomantonio is also Chief of Surgical Services for Colchester East Hants Health Authority. He holds academic appointments in the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University as Assistant Professor in the Departments of Surgery and Pathology. As an educator, Dr. Giacomantonio has lectured on various topics under the surgical oncology umbrella. He has supervised many students and has been honoured with a number of teaching awards.

Dr. Giacomantonio is a member of countless professional associations and provides leadership as a member of both the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada’s specialty committee on Surgical Oncology and the executive of the National Cancer Institute of Canada’s Melanoma Site Group. Dr. Giacomantonio also participates on the Royal College Examination Development Committee for the Surgical Oncology Exam in addition to his role as an Examiner in General Surgery.

His research interests include the biology of how cancer spreads and the impact of surgical procedures on this process.

Dr. Giacomantonio believes strongly in giving back to the community where he and his family live. He has been a member of the board of directors for the Canadian Cancer Society since 2008, providing direction and leadership to the organization. As the Vice Chair of the Nova Scotia Division’s Capital Campaign, he is leading fundraising efforts to support cancer research. His charitable work extends beyond cancer to include the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia and the Heartland Tour, a public awareness campaign that uses the bicycle as a vehicle to educate and draw attention to the importance of healthy lifestyle in preventing heart disease, cancer and other chronic diseases.

The Italian Order of Merit was presented to Dr. Giacomantonio in recognition of his ongoing commitment to advancing cancer system improvement and care as well as his support and leadership to many community-based organizations. With this honour, Dr. Giacomantonio joins the ranks of fellow Nova Scotian Archbishop Emeritus James M. Hayes (Archbishop of Halifax, 1967-1990). Other notable individuals to receive the Italian Order of Merit include: Queen Elizabeth II, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Martin Scorzese, Robert DeNiro, Sofia Loren, and Nancy Pelosi.
