Helpful books about cancer available at Nova Scotia libraries

Cancer Care Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Provincial Library have partnered to make six new books about cancer available at all 79 provincial libraries.

The book titles include:
-- After you Ring the Bell… Ten Key Challenges for the Cancer Survivor
-- Man Cancer Sex
-- The Essential Cancer Treatment Nutrition Guide and Cookbook
-- The Healing Journey – Overcoming the Crisis of Cancer
-- When a Parent is Sick – Helping Parents Explain Serious Illness to Children
-- Woman Cancer Sex

"We asked cancer health professionals and patients to list the books about cancer they considered must-reads," said Meg McCallum, provincial manager, Education and Patient Navigation at Cancer Care Nova Scotia. "Members of Nova Scotia Cancer Patient Education Committee reviewed the books health professionals and patients suggested and quickly agreed on six titles."

George Beck, public advisor, Nova Scotia Patient Education Committee said patients and families often have questions and information needs beyond their disease and treatment details.

"I've been diagnosed with three different cancers and I know how important it is to have good information," said Mr. Beck. “Some patients and families will turn to the Internet for information. Some will reach out to other patients or family and friends, and others may not feel comfortable reaching out to anyone. By having books in libraries across Nova Scotia people have another option to find information.”

The provincial library works with Nova Scotia's 79 public libraries, providing leadership and support to ensure libraries continue to offer services that enrich lives and communities.

"Public libraries have long been navigators of information that help people get on with their lives, whether through fiction or non-fiction," said Jennifer Evans, provincial librarian. "This collection well serves people with cancer and their families through a variety of topics that are vital to their well-being."
