News and NotesCongratulations to Dr. Shelagh Leahey, a family physician in Yarmouth, who was named the 2011 NS Family Physician of the Year by the Nova Scotia College of Family Physicians. Dr. Leahey was recognized for her contribution to her family practice and the medical community as well as for her leadership in developing Ocean View Family Practice.

Dr. Leahey’s areas of expertise include in-patient care, emergency care, obstetrics and palliative care. In addition to maintaining her medical practice, Dr. Leahey has been medical education coordinator at Dalhousie University since 2003. She is also medical administrator of Ocean view Family Practice.

Over the years she has been a dedicated volunteer with organizations including, the Nursing Task Force and Doctors Nova Scotia. She served as President of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia from 2008 to 2010 and was an active member of board of Cancer Care Nova Scotia and the Reproductive Care Advisory Committee.

•“Brain Fog, cognitive changes associated with cancer treatment,” is the topic of the next Cancer Answers Public Lecture. It will be held on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. It will also be available by video conference in health districts across the province.
