Make a Move

The goal of this program is to increase the quantity and quality of physical activity counseling by health professionals in Nova Scotia through training and support.

The need for Make a Move and enhanced skill in physical activity counseling was identified through a provincial survey of health care provider efforts to promote physical activity.  The survey found that few health care providers addressed the need for physical activity with their clients.  It also found that advice to clients, when offered, was inconsistent and often not aligned with approved physical activity guidelines.

Make a Move was built on the Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute (CFLRI)  PACE (Physician Based Assessment and Counseling for Exercise) program.  Through Make a Move, health care providers including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists and others can build their skills to counsel their clients on how to become more physically active.  Make a Move training workshops are offered throughout the province by experienced trainers.

At this time, all district health authorities have Make a Move trainers in place.  Make a Move is a collaborative program of Cancer Care Nova Scotia, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia and Nova Scotia Health Promotion and Protection.
