When you first learn that you have cancer, your feelings may overwhelm you. Common reactions are sadness, fear, anger, denial and feeling helpless. You should know that these feelings are normal. Almost all people will have them. They are not a sign of weakness. You should not feel guilty about having these feelings.
The health professionals who make up your healthcare team, want to help you and your family and/or friends cope with your feelings about cancer. Your healthcare team will provide you with information that can help you gain more control over the way you deal with your cancer.
It is important to remember that everyone is different. Some people want to deal with their cancer with very little information about it. Other people feel they will cope better with their cancer if they have a greater understanding of the disease and its treatment.
