Take Care of Yourself

It is important to Take Care of Yourself

Although you are not the one with cancer, it is normal to feel emotionally and physically drained. It is important that you maintain your health for your own sense of well-being and so you can take care of your loved one to the best of your ability. Try to eat healthy, stay active, and get as much rest as you can.

You might feel the need to ignore your own feelings in order to maintain strength in your loved one. It is normal to feel stressed out and afraid. It is important that you cope with your emotions in a healthy way. For example, you may use relaxation techniques:
    • Exercise
    • Meditation or Prayer
    • Communicate your feelings to others. You can do this in a support group, or to a
    close friend or family member.
    • Keep a journal
    • Make time for things you normally enjoy.
    • Remember, it is okay to cry and laugh. These reactions can help relieve tension.
    • Ask for help. Being a caregiver is not an easy job, and it is okay to receive help
    from others.

Being prepared for your role as a caregiver and knowing what to expect will make you more confident and better able to care for the patient.

It is difficult to find time for yourself when you are the primary caregiver and worried about your loved one with cancer.
