Benefits of Clinical Trials

How will I benefit from taking part in a clinical trial?

Adapted with permission from the Hamilton Regional Cancer Centre, Cancer Care Ontario.

There are many ways you can benefit from clinical trials. You and your cancer doctor, along with your family, will discuss the benefits of participating in a clinical trial to assist you in making your decision.

• Clinical trials offer you high quality care.
• Your results may be better than if you did not take part in a clinical trial.
• You are taking an active role in your cancer care by looking at all the treatment choices available to you.
• You may be followed more often and may have more visits to the cancer clinic.
• Taking part in a clinical trial may help find better ways to prevent, detect or treat cancer.

Not everyone has the same reasons for taking part in a clinical trial. Some patients find participating in a clinical trial gives them hope for themselves and for other cancer patients in the future.

Are there risks to a clinical trial?
• New treatments are not always better.
• You may have side effects that are not expected. The side effects may be better or worse than those of the usual treatment.
• You may have to make more visits to the cancer clinic. This may be a problem if you live outside Halifax or Sydney.

Only you can decide if taking part in a clinical trial is right for you. Find out about other options and the risks and benefits of the treatments offered. Talk to members of your health care team. They can help you make the right choice.
