Cancer Care Nova Scotia - 10 Years on...A new year brings with it an opportunity to start anew, to take stock of where we’ve been, where we are and to set our direction for the future. For Cancer Care Nova Scotia, in 2009, this is especially important. This year marks ten years of working to enable quality cancer prevention and care for all Nova Scotians.

Together with our partners, we have accomplished a great deal. We developed and delivered continuing education programs for all manner of health professionals. We’ve changed how care is delivered by intoducing new practices, improved standards and care guidelines to ensure consistent care and developed services to support patients receiving their care closer to home.

In just 10 short years we’ve become national leaders in Cancer Patient Navigation. Our growth in cancer research has expanded  far greater than any other province. We are one of the first provinces to implement a population-based colorectal cancer screening program. In March 2009 the program will be available in three health districts, with others being phased in within a year.

These are but a few of the highlights of our first ten years. The inroads we have made in improving the cancer system for Nova Scotians would not have been possible without the hard work and support of our many stakeholders.

To mark our tenth anniversary and to salute the many partners who have worked with us to enhance and improve cancer services for Nova Scotia patients and families, we have introduced and are inviting nominations for four CCNS Excellence Awards: Leadership Excellence, Innovation Excellence, Excellence in Patient Care and Pioneer Excellence. The CCNS Excellence Awards acknowledge the work and commitment of the many people, partnerships, and organizations that have and/or continue to work with Cancer Care Nova Scotia to enable quality cancer prevention and care for all Nova Scotians.

If you know someone in your community who meets the criteria for any or all of the CCNS Excellence Awards, we want to hear from you. For more information about the awards, including an application form, click here or call us, toll-free at 1-866-599-2267.

To all who have worked with Cancer Care Nova Scotia or supported our work during any of the last 10 years and to all who will continue working with us to continually improve the cancer system for Nova Scotia cancer patients and families, a very sincere thank you! Happy New Year!
